No Ice in HCUC this Summer says City of Melville

The City of Melville has announced in an email to rink patrons that they will not be leaving the ice in Horizon Credit Union Center this spring and summer.   According to the email the chiller in HCUC's Ice plant ruptured causing ammonia to enter our brine and vice versa. The city of Melville has repaired the rupture and has ensured that the plant is operating safely.

Not estimate of the cost of the repairs for the local tax payers has been made yet.  At this time we are waiting for a reply from the City on this matter.

An excerpt of the letter is below:

"I regret to inform you that the City of Melville will not be able to run Spring and Summer Ice for the 2019 season.

This year the chiller in our Ice plant ruptured causing ammonia to enter our brine and vice versa. We have repaired the rupture and have ensured that the plant is operating safely. But this incident leaves us with a long list of mandatory repairs that need to take place while the ice plant is off and the arena slab is warm. The list of repairs includes: draining the plant of all brine and flushing the system to remove contamination, removing the ammonia and purging with nitrogen to evacuate moisture, repairing concrete in our header trench, re-insulation of the ice plant, etc.

These repairs mean that we will not be running ice between April 8th  to August 23rd 2019.

These repairs will ensure the safety of our patrons and will also ensure the longevity of our arena to provide ice for years to come.

We appreciate your patience in this matter and apologize for any inconvenience
