2026 Medicine Hat Massacre Race Registration Now Open

Medicine Hat adventure race boosts tourism, supports local causes

Southeastern Alberta’s rugged beauty will take centre stage next spring as the Medicine Hat Massacre Adventure Race returns to Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park, combining outdoor tourism with community impact.

The nine-hour endurance event, set for May 9, 2026, draws athletes from across Canada to southeastern Alberta, promoting economic development while supporting two vital causes: the Medicine Hat Food Bank and Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue (SEASAR).

Registration for the 2026 race is now open. Participants compete in teams of two, navigating remote terrain with only a map and compass. The challenge includes mountain biking, paddling, and trekking through the park’s wild landscapes, all while collecting checkpoints to earn points.

“This isn't just a race, it’s a tradition,” said Paul MacKenzie, race organizer. “For nearly 20 years, the Medicine Hat Massacre has showcased the natural beauty and history of Cypress Hills while supporting the community.”

Race fees help fund SEASAR’s search and rescue operations, ensuring crews remain equipped and ready to respond in emergencies. The event also partners with the Medicine Hat's food bank, the Root Cellar, to bring needed resources to community members.

MacKenzie suggests the race makes a great goal for New Years resolutions. Details, registration options, and updates are available at mhmassacre.ca. Information about SEASAR and its mission can be found at seasar.net.

Race for adventure. Race for safety. Race for your community.
