On today's episode of #Saskatravelers we are in Ardill, Saskatchewan for the 5th Annual Justinsane Barbie Car Race. This event is held in honor of Justin Kowalski who was tragically taken from the community 5 years ago. This event in the last 4 years has raised over $24,000 that has been donated to various local community clubs, facilities and organizations such as: the Mossbank Swimming Pool, Assiniboia Civic Centre and the Mossbank Rec Board. On this episode of #Saskatravelers we find ourselves down in Souh Central Saskatchewan in a region know as the Big Muddy. Join us as we wind our way through the hills south east of Willowbunch, Saskatchewan on our way to Castle Butte, a 230 ft monolyhth in the middle of the Big Muddy Valley.

On this week's episode of #Saskatravelers we are on the East end of Crooked Lake exploring the water control structure and it's history at the Qu'appelle River mouth near Sunset Beach. After that we will make our way through Sunset Beach to the Hilltop Burial Grounds Trail located North of the Crooked Lake Provincial Park to take in breathtaking views of the Qu'appelle Valley, The Provincial Park and the East end of Crooked Lake. On today's episode of #Saskatravelers we find ourselves in the small Saskatchewan City of Melville in the East Central part of the province. Come with us as we wander our way down Main Street travelling back in time taking in the nostalgia of the former CNR Rail Station, the Neo-Baroque Architecture of the close to a century old Canada Post Office Building and the Romanesque windows and domed roof of City Hall.

Join the #Saskatravelers as they make their way up the steep hillside as they explore ancient poplar and spruce forrest at the foot of the Spruce River Highland Lookout Tower. WARNING - This is bear country so it is recommended to carry bear spray and to follow smart bear safety. Spruce River Highlands Trail takes you over numerous glaciation features that makes this hike somewhat strenuous depending on your fitness level. The first half can be completed by a beginner hiker with only water and bear spray, the back portion I would recommend that you pack food, water, bear spray and lots of bug spray or lotion. I recommend Watkins Bug Repellent Lotion as it seems to be the most effective. Most of the park is dominated by coniferous forests, with the cover of jack pine and white spruce becoming more prevalent the farther north one looks. The boreal forest extends northerly into the Canadian Shield area from the agricultural zones of southern Saskatchewan. Prince Albert National Park lies south of the Canadian Shield in landscapes that were shaped by Ice Age glaciers from which lasted from about 2.5 Million to 11,700 years ago that deposited glacial till, sand and other materials that were later colonized by trees and shrubs giving birth to the forest we see today. During the warm, humid summers there is abundant insect life, berries and numerous fungi, sustaining a remarkable diversity of boreal forest birds, mammals and other wildlife. About a kilometre into the 8.5 km trail loop there is a 10 meter tall tower that lets you gaze out over the forest canopy at the Spruce River, this is where most beginner hikers turn around. This is what we are doing to today as we have 5 other trails to complete while the weather seems to be holding back. We will be doing another video on the back portion of the Spruce River Highlands Trail in the near future. The best times to hike this trail are either early summer or early fall when the mosquitoes aren’t as aggressive at those times. Today we find ourselves in one of the rarest ecosystems in the Province of Saskatchewan. The Fen trail at Duck Mountain Provincial Park is home to one of three protected Calcareous Fens within Saskatchewan Provincial Park Borders. This Calcareous Fen is home to a wild abundance of plant life which includes: Sedges, Grasses, Mosses, Lichen, wildflowers and willows. This Fen also harbors a wide variety of rare and endangered plants including 26 species that do not live anywhere else in the Park and two species of Orchid that are found no where else in the province. The Fen trail is 600 meters long and includes a 300 meter boardwalk to protect the fragile ecosystem of the Calcareous Fen.

On today's episode of #Saskatravelers we find ourselves exploring the Creeping Juniper vine covered Sand Dunes of Good Spirit Lake Provincial Park in East Central Saskatchewan. Wander with us through the forest and along the white sand of Gunn Beach on the South East shore of Good Spirit Lake where we follow the Discovery Dunes Interpretive Trail to take in the sights of the five story high Sand Dunes that offer a terrific view of the Lake and the surrounding Poplar forest canopy.
